One incredibly simple way to read the bible is known as Bible Discovery.

Bible

We love the Bible, and wholeheartedly believe that God has given us these words to reveal his love to us; to help us through our daily lives and to guide us.  But we also recognise that it is tricky to know where to start (not at the beginning; instead start with a gospel like Mark, Luke or John), and how to understand parts of it, and as such we encourage thoughtful Bible study.

One incredibly simple, but effective technique is known as Bible Discovery.  This technique consists of:-

  • Reading the passage of Scripture
  • Re-telling the passage in your own words to see what you did and didn’t notice, and how you understood it.
  • Read the passage again to see how it compares with your version and notice what did and didn’t jump out to you.
  • Ask, “what does this tell me about God/Jesus?”
  • Ask, “what does this tell me about people?” Look at the characters in the story to answer this one.
  • Ask, “what does this tell me about me/us?”  E.g. do I need to pray about this, respond to this in a practical way, or by changing the way I live; or do I need to pass this truth on to someone who needs to hear this?

You can try this for yourself on an App.

There are plenty of other Bible reading apps out there but we find BIOY particularly helpful. There is a youth resource, adults or a quicker session – click here for more details.

We currently run one Bible Discovery Group fortnightly on Zoom. Please contact us if you would like to join in. You don’t need any prior knowledge to enjoy taking part in this.
